Cool quick questions from a new owner

hey!
i just bought a 96 camaro V6 automatic with t-tops. its my new baby and single handedly turned me into a camaro enthusiast. the previous owner took amazing care of it, but i am wondering what problems are typical of this year and engine etc. Are there any problems that most owners are fixing and if so, how will i know the syptoms?

Thanks,
Gtshadow

Welcome.

1996 is a very fine year for the Camaro (though I may be biased )

Our engine is a very hardy one but there are some things that you'll likely see.

1) Mr. SES light (Service Engine Soon) - you'll get to know him sooner or later

2) EGR Valve - related to #1/no symptoms, just a SES light

3) Rear main seal - small oil leak

4) Spark plug wires - our engine loves to eat them

Hopefully #2 & #3 went out on the first guy so you won't have to deal with them.

Good luck with your new baby!

a few minor problems/questions

thanks for replying importkiller (and great name by the way! those import tuners aint got nothin' on us!)

- i was wondering if you have had any problems with your windows, if they are automatic, because my driver's side one is choosing to role up and down very sporadically.

- also, i was talking to another camaro owner who said that "hyper-ignition" was a problem for our model year. have you heard of such a thing and if so, what is it?

I'm sure some of the guys here with auto windows will help you with the window issue, I have the manual windows.

Hyper ignition? Got me there...they might be referring to the Opti, but that is only in the V8 models.

One thing you might also want to look into is replacing the shocks. With that year, the shocks are probably past their lifespan. You can pick up some take-off shocks off a Z28 with almost no miles on them at www.slponline.com for about $100 for all 4.

Time for a new one more than likely. The motors tend to go out pretty easily in the 4th Gen F-Bodies.
