The 383 sounds like SH*T please HELP!

My 383 Jordan built for me has awesome power, but it has started making a loud knocking sound. Anyone around the DFW area willing to listen to it, and tell me what they think it is? Jordan my friend will next time he is in town, but seeing how that will probably be a while, I better find out what it is before it is too late to correct it. I have changed the oil as instructed by Jordan and I haven't even gone over 6000rpm in it yet. The motor has just over 500 miles on it. I am worried that I might be screwedif something bad is wrong with it. I am still looking for a job and cannot afford to pull the motor back out right now as it is our only "working" car

Make sure it's not something stupid like a header gasket. Was there any metal in the oil you drained?

Bret,
has the oil pressure changed at all or does it get lower when the engine is warm?

Hopefully the answers the both questions are NO!!!!

Check converter bolts (if automaitic, but I think yours is a 6spd), exhaust leaks, etc, and hopefully you find something. If the oil pressure has changed or changes when warm and it didn't when first installed than you can probably stop looking and pull the motor. I hope you find it and I hope it is easily fixed.

Post what town you are in and hopefully someone close to you can drop by and help ya diagnose the noise.

GOOD LUCK

LOL
NO problem Lloyd I wiped the tears away and I am better now. The oil pressue goes higher when I hammer it, and I do have a fairly large exhaust leak I can hear,(Jordan thinks it comes from the ball joint on the header where it meets the gasket.) There has been MINIMAL metal shavings on the oil plug when I change the oil. I think that metal was from the rod bolt clearancing the oil pan. This motor is not by any means a bad job by Jordan, he got into more then he bargained for I am sure. With a couple unexpected extra trips the GUNTER, TX LOL. I know 100 times more about motors then before we pulled and replaced it, but I am positive most people who know more then me could isolate the sound. Hell I am not even sure it is coming from the motor, if it is I think it may be a rocker hitting the valve cover on the passenger side but I can't tell for sure.

you might get a manual oil pressure guage on it (if it is not too late) and see what kinda pressure it has.

You can also cut the oil filter open and look and see if you can see metal or copper shavings in the oil.

It sounds like you have figured out the problem though (Hopefully).

Good luck with it.

I guess it is too late not sre where I would plug that sucker in. Don't forget what I first thought when you suggested a head job! j/k It is a loud intermittent ticking or taping noise ( i guess that would be concidered a knock ) that occured only in 6th gear then every gear mostly when accelerating. I havne't retightened anything since the installation due to a lack of proper tools and money to buy those tools. I will change the oil tonight, I haven't driven it since the first post in the msg.
