BFG tire failure!

BFG tire failure!
Has anyone else had a sidewall failure with a BFG comp T/A tire?
I had a blowout today, it scared the **** out of me.
I thought these were pretty much indestructable tires?
Guess I was wrong.

Scary...sounds like you came away unharmed...good thing.
How many miles on the tires? You might want to go back to your store to see if there's a warranty on them or something. I wouldn't say that any tire is indestructable, but if your BFGs blew after 5K miles or so, could be manufacturer defect. Did you have a really bad case of curb rash a while back and maybe the sidewall was damaged? Or you could just have gotten a bad one from the factory.
I had a buddy that had some new Nitto 555s and blew a sidewall. He called up Nitto and got a replacement sent right away.

Re: BFG tire failure!
The tire had around 3K on it, that's it.
After thinking about this for the last few days, it was not a catastrophic failure. I was driving on the freeway when the car started pulling to the right and felt like it was "wondering". I knew something was wrong, no doubt, so I slowed to around 50 mph until the freeway exit another few miles away. Got off the freeway, drove it about another 1/2 mile, and then the tire almost came off the rim. The rim appears to be undamaged luckily. Perhaps the tire lost air and then driving on it further cause the sidewall to fail, I don't know.
Anyways, it could have been a lot worse. If the tire did come off a highway speed, I could have totalled the car and who knows what else. Definitly the scariest event since I bought the car in '94.

Re: BFG tire failure!
I have BFG KDWS tires on mine and in the last 6 months I've had to replace 3 of them. 2 were blowouts... All caused by punctures to the tread then the sidewall coming apart when all the air escaped at highway speeds... All I can say is that I'm happy they have all been rear tires..

Re: BFG tire failure!
well considering comp t/a's arent around anymore, id assume that tire itself is about 3-4 years old anyways....age kills tires too.
regardless, if you got the tires for America's Tire co. the warranty should cover it. if not, and if the tire is within the 1st 3/32nds of thread (7/32nds or more), Michelin has a goodwill tire return policy, yes, I said Michelin. they own BFG. If you can make it over to Canoga Park, stop by my store, I'll see what I can do for you

Re: BFG tire failure!
Hey Zack,
Thanks for the offer! You work for a good company.
Funny, I purchased my previous set of BFG's from America's tire here in Granada Hills. The most recent set I bought from Costco in Northridge, I know the manager there. I'm pretty sure they're going to give me a free tire.
I just hope a tire doesn't give out when too far from home 'cause I don't carry a spare.

Re: BFG tire failure!
CheshireCat,
Have you checked your wheel to see if it's cracked and not holding air. I can't image 2 tires of any brand blowing out within 6 months. There's a reason for all the air coming out at highway speeds, and I can't image you get 2 lemons for tires, unless you're just the unluckiest guy when it comes to tires.
Also, why'd you keep going back to BFGs? I figure 1 blowout is freaky enough to steer away from that brand, but you came back and added another set twice? Seriously, I would check your wheels in case there's a bigger problem.

Re: BFG tire failure!
a random blowout is caused by excessive heat bulid up. can happen to the best tires out there.
thats why we send them back to the manufacturers. If they notice they are getting the same tires built at the same time in the same plant(read from the DOT serial number) back with the same problems, then they issue a recall
