help with 315 35 17

Hey, I just got some 17"x11" ZR1 wheels, and wanted to go with the above tire size for better traction and a cool look from behind. My stock 245-45-17 suck as far as traction off the line. Will the 315's spin less. Will I sacrafice handling on turn in??? Who has these on right now???? The front tires will be 275-40-17 of course.... Thanks!!!!!!!!!!!

just because they are wider doesn't guarantee more traction. the type or rubber has more to do with it.

not to mention the smaller sidewall with the 17" rims will have less flex which can hurt traction.

was he talking about drag radials?

and to answer your question...i have no idea.

but there are some FAST cars out there running on 10" tires due to class restrictions.

Uhh, what does that have to do w/ anything? And it's probably a 325/50/15 or something.

Back on topic, 315s WILL increase your traction in a straight line that's for sure. At least w/ 315 nittos!

Re: help with 315 35 17

It seems like a pretty simple idea. A bigger contact patch will yeild more traction. Like already stated, the tire compound will be the biggest factor. Take a 275 width tire and a 315 width tire, mounted correctly on the correct size rim, properly inflated, made from the same compound, it's logical that the wider tire will provide more traction.

I've been running 315 series Nitto drag radials for 3 years now on my 11" wide ZR1s and they are a great street tire. They work well for cornering. I'm not about to take them autocrossing, but they work well on the street. Heat them up and they grip on the street.

Re: help with 315 35 17

last i checked the record was a 17 or 18" bfg drg radial in the 7's. he made a comment about the low side wall reducing traction. tire compound is where it's at like he stated.

THAT is what it has to do with it.

pagress,
how many miles do you generally get outta nitto's, i'm in the same boat, trying to decide between DR's and a soft cheap street tire. i do alot of driving and need at least a year out of them.

Re: help with 315 35 17

I generally get about 15K miles out of a pair. I watch the tire pressure closely because the middles wear down the fastest. I keep it right around 25 psi to get as even wear as possible. This summer I'm going to run some Toyo Proxes U1s on the back instead. I've got a separate set of rims for drag radials. The only real downside with the Nittos is they can suck pretty bad in the rain. Of course, with a 315 series tire, just about any tread design is going to hydroplane easily.

Re: help with 315 35 17

I am running 315/35/17's on the rear of mine also, I am running the Goodyear Eagle F1 GS-D3. I noticed a big difference in traction with the larger contact patch and in cornering also they don't spin much at all. These tires are awesome in the rain to I could do 70 with no problem. I love the look with those 315's on.

Re: help with 315 35 17

I ran 315 35 17 BFG drg rdls last summer drove it on the street and at strip. They are completely bare now and took them off. I took them to the track 4 times and had maybe 40 total runs before it finally got tuned properly. Then I only got one run cause they were busy. Anyway, they hooked up great street and strip.
